How the spacebar counter works

The counter listens for the Space key and counts every separate press. When you hold a key down, your keyboard starts repeating it after a short delay; those repeats are ignored here, so the number you see is what your thumb actually did. The timer starts with your first press and stops on its own.

At the end you see the total number of presses and the average presses per second (PPS), plus the most presses that landed inside a single second.

Timer options

  • 5 and 10 seconds: pure speed, the usual spacebar challenge.
  • 30 and 60 seconds: endurance; your speed will drop and that is the point.
  • 100 seconds: a long test for the patient.

Tips to press faster

  1. Use both thumbs. Alternating left and right thumbs on a wide spacebar is the fastest method for most people.
  2. Do not press too deep. A key only needs to travel far enough to register. Short, light presses are faster than slamming it.
  3. Check your keyboard. Some cheap keyboards miss very fast presses. A mechanical switch usually registers more of them.

Spacebar Counter: questions

Does holding the spacebar count?

Holding Space counts as one press. Automatic key repeats are ignored, so only separate presses add to your score.

Why does the counter not react to my key presses?

The test area needs keyboard focus. Click the box once, then press Space.

Can I use the spacebar counter on mobile?

Yes. On a touch screen, tapping the box counts the same way a Space press does.
